Before You Understand
⁷ Respondeu Jesus: "Você não compreende agora o que estou lhe fazendo; mais tarde, porém, entenderá".
We live in a time that expects instant clarity. If a message is left unread, a plan changes, or life feels delayed, our first instinct is to ask for an explanation now.
Peter reacts that way when Jesus comes near to wash his feet. He is unsettled, and honestly, his question makes sense. What Jesus is doing does not fit Peter's expectations of how the Lord should act. Jesus does not give a full explanation on the spot. Instead, he invites Peter to trust before he understands. That is often one of the hardest forms of faith: not believing after everything makes sense, but staying close to Jesus while it does not.
There are moments when Christ's work in our lives feels confusing, humbling, even uncomfortable. He may be undoing our pride, softening our need for control, or teaching us to receive grace instead of managing everything ourselves. This passage reminds us that lack of understanding is not the same as lack of purpose. What we cannot explain today may become clear later. Until then, the invitation is simple and deep: let Jesus remain Lord even in the parts you cannot yet interpret.
Exercise
The next time you feel frustrated by something you do not understand, put your phone down for two minutes and say out loud: "Jesus, I do not understand this yet, but I choose to stay close to you." Then write one sentence about the situation and one small act of trust you can take today instead of forcing an answer.
Reflect
Where in your life are you demanding immediate understanding, when Jesus may be inviting you to trust him first?
