Ears Beneath the Noise
¹⁰ Ele disse: "A vocês foi dado o conhecimento dos mistérios do Reino de Deus, mas aos outros falo por parábolas, para que ‘vendo, não vejam; e ouvindo, não entendam’.
We live in a time of endless content, where we can hear thousands of voices in a day and still miss what matters most. It is possible to be surrounded by words, explanations, and spiritual language, yet remain untouched at the level of the heart.
Jesus shows that the kingdom of God is not grasped by curiosity alone, but received as a gift. The disciples ask, and Jesus answers; they come near, and understanding is given. That is the contrast in these verses: not between smart people and simple people, but between those who stay at the surface and those who draw close enough to listen. The mysteries of God are not unlocked by speed, confidence, or religious performance, but by humble dependence.
There is also a sober warning here. A person can see and still not perceive, hear and still not understand. Truth can stand right in front of us while our inner life remains closed. In a distracted and opinion-saturated age, this should make us gentler and more prayerful. We do not need more spiritual noise; we need hearts made soft before Christ. The good news is that Jesus does not shame those who ask. He welcomes disciples who come honestly, wanting to understand.
Exercise
Set aside 10 uninterrupted minutes today. Put your phone face down, read this passage slowly twice, and then write down two short sentences: one beginning with “What I think I already know is...” and another with “What I need Jesus to show me is...”. End by sitting in silence for one minute and simply saying, “Lord, give me ears to hear.”
Reflect
Where in my life am I hearing Jesus at the surface, but resisting the deeper understanding that would require humility and change?
