The Good We Chase
In 2026, it is easy to think every deep need has a quick solution: one more video, one better routine, one more thing to achieve. The soul can start asking God the same way, as if eternal life were unlocked by the right spiritual performance.
Jesus gently redirects that instinct. Instead of feeding the idea that one impressive deed will settle everything, he turns the question back toward God: goodness begins with God himself, not with our ability to produce something worthy enough. That is humbling, because it means life with God is not built on self-congratulation. It begins with recognizing who God is and letting his standard, not our own, define what is good.
Then Jesus names commands that are deeply relational: do not harm, do not betray, do not steal, do not lie, honor your father and mother, love your neighbor as yourself. This is not flashy religion. It is holy love made visible in ordinary life. The path Jesus points to is not about appearing impressive, but about becoming truthful, faithful, honoring, and loving in the places where people are most affected by us. In a world trained to perform goodness online, Jesus calls us to practice it where it costs something and where another person is actually cared for.
Exercise
Today, choose one command from this passage and practice it in a visible, concrete way. For example, tell the full truth in a conversation where it would be easier to shade it, honor a parent or older family member with an intentional call or message, or do one practical act of care for a neighbor, colleague, or classmate without announcing it online. At the end of the day, take two minutes in silence and ask God to show you whether your goodness is more about image or love.
Reflect
Where in my life am I looking for one impressive act to feel right with God, when Jesus is calling me into steady, everyday love for the people around me?
