Stay and See

Come and See

João 1:38-39 ³⁸ Voltando-se e vendo Jesus que os dois o seguiam, perguntou-lhes: "O que vocês querem? " Eles disseram: "Rabi", ( que significa Mestre ), "onde estás hospedado? "
³⁹ Respondeu ele: "Venham e verão". Então foram, por volta das quatro horas da tarde, viram onde ele estava hospedado e passaram com ele aquele dia.

In a world of constant scrolling, searching, and checking for the next answer, it is possible to be very busy and still not know what we are truly looking for. Jesus' first question cuts through the noise with surprising tenderness: "What do you want?"

He does not begin by giving these two followers a lecture. He draws out their desire. Their answer is simple and personal: they want to know where he is staying. And Jesus responds with an invitation, not just information: "Come and you will see." This is the way of discipleship. Faith is not built only by collecting ideas about Jesus, but by drawing near, staying with him, and letting his presence reshape our questions.

The detail that they stayed with him that day matters. Real spiritual change often begins there: not in a dramatic moment, but in chosen nearness. Jesus still welcomes honest seekers. He is not put off by incomplete understanding or awkward first steps. If your heart is restless, distracted, or spiritually tired, his invitation is still open. Come closer. Stay a while. Let being with him become more important than merely knowing about him.

Exercise

Set aside 20 minutes today with your phone on airplane mode. Read these two verses slowly three times, then write one honest sentence beginning with: "What I am really seeking right now is..." After that, sit in silence for two minutes and end by saying aloud: "Jesus, I am coming to be with you."

Reflect

If Jesus asked you today, "What do you want?", what desire would rise to the surface most honestly?
